MERGU and CSM/RESIST: Radical Right-wing Parties in Europe

Jens Rydgren, Professor in Sociology, Stockholm University. In relation to the release of The Oxford Handbook of the Radical Right, edited by Rydgren and published by the Oxford University Press, 2018. A Social Science Seminar, co-hosted by the CGM, the Department of Political Science and the Department of Sociology and Work Science.

Abstract: In this talk I will reflect upon some explanations to the emergence of radical right-wing parties in Europe. In addition to this overall theme, which entails a cross-time comparison, four questions in particular will be addressed: (1) Why are such parties more successful in some countries than in others? (2) What characterize these parties, in terms of ideology and discourse? (3) What characterize the voters who support these parties? (4) What are the consequences for party systems dynamics? The talk will - to some extent at least - be based on the recently released Oxford Handbook of the Radical Right (2018), for which I was the editor.

This seminar is co-hosted by various research seminars at the Department of Political Science, the Department of Sociology and Work Science and the Centre on Global Migration.
