Elena completed her PhD at the Max-Plank-Institute for the Studies of Societies and received her degree in 2011 from Cologne University (Germany). In different years she was a visiting researcher at Columbia University in the City of New-York, London School of Economics, Bielefeld University, and a Postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Sociology, Stockholm University. Research interests: economic sociology and STS, valuation, markets for singularities, sustainability.
Elena Bogdanova is is involved in following research projects
2022-2026 Fossil Free Futures: Divestment Across the Nordic Countries (PI Linda Soneryd)
The project studies initiatives to opt out of fossil fuels investments in the pension funds. The aim of the project is to better understand actors of change, their tools and practices. The project is taking place at Score, Stockholm Centre for Organizational Research, University of Stockholm
2018-2022 ”Deltagande i renovering: Mot ett ekologiskt, socialt och ekonomiskt hållbart miljonprogram?" (FORMAS, PI Håkan Thörn, Department of Sociology and Work Science, University of Gothenburg).
The purpose of the project is to analyse residents' participation in the process of renovation of housing stock built within as a part of the so-called Million Dwellings Program in Sweden in 1960-1975. The project is implemented by the researchers at the Department of Sociology and Work Science, Södertorn University, and the Institute for Housing Studies in Uppsala.
2017-2021 Maintenance Matters. Exploring common contexts of Heritage (e)valuation funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet, PI Ingrid Martins Holmberg, Department of Conservation, GU). The project is extended until 2023, PI Elena Bogdanova
The purpose of the project is to explore enduring values and meanings found within common contexts of ‘maintenance and repair’ (craftsmanship; built heritage designation; homeowners engagement) in an urban setting. These contexts are considered as core heritage phenomena that enable for ‘the past’ to endure and remain in our contemporary modern world. Elena is responsible for one of the working packages within this project:
Valuing the past: cultural heritage as socio-spatial co-construction
The purpose of this part of the project is to map the evaluative practices of different groups of stakeholders engaged in the maintenance of buildings-as-heritage, and trace how the value is created through “productive frictions” of different valuation principles in the process of maintenance and repair. Her other current research activity relates to storytelling as citizen participation technology in built heritage designation.
