Om Gabriella Elgenius

Gabriella Elgenius is Associate Professor in Sociology (Docent/Reader) at the Department of Sociology and Work Science at Gothenburg University and Associate Member at the Department of Sociology (University of Oxford) and the Centre for Migration and Diaspora (SOAS, University of London).

Gabriella received her doctorate at the LSE as a Marie Curie Fellow in 2005, and later held a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship (2007-2011) at Nuffield College and the Department of Sociology at the University of Oxford, where she has been departmental lecturer and researcher (2005-2014). Before she joined the faculty at University of Gothenburg in 2014 she has also worked as a researcher and lecturer at the LSE, Birkbeck College and School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London.

Gabriella research focuses on political sociology, nationalism, migration and integration within the following fields: nationalism and the rise of ethnic nationalism and the Radical Right; diaspora mobilization, civil society and migrant organization in diverse areas; socio-political integration and the role of ethnic bonding and bridging social capital; migration, polarization and socio-economic integration on the labour-market. She uses comparative qualitative research designs as well as mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) approaches in order to respond to the fields above.

Gabriella is a member of the Scientific Council of National Movements and Intermediary Structures in Europe (NISE) and the Association of the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism (ASEN) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

Gabriella teaches and supervises on her research areas nationalism, migration and integration, radical movements, diaspora and civil society, ethnic and gender stratification in organisations. She teaches courses in qualitative research methods and theory and Grounded Theory on Master and PhD levels.

Framing ethno-nationalism: a study of the Sweden Democrats and the resurgence of reactionary nationalism in Sweden (with Jens Rydgren, Stockholm University, funded by the Swedish Research Council).

The Repatriation of Cultural Heritage: national museums, nation-building and rival narratives in the Nordic countries. This project forms part of a long-standing interest in national symbolism and its role in nation building. It builds on previous research funded by the European Commission, Marie Curie TMR, and recently the Centre for Concurrences: Colonial and Post-Colonial Studies LNU.)
